About this scan
What this scan involves
This is the abdominal scan and the pelvic scan performed in one visit, by the same clinician, and reported together. It covers the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and kidneys, and the uterus and ovaries or prostate, in one sitting.
Why book both together
Abdominal symptoms often do not respect the line between abdomen and pelvis. Generalised pain, unexplained weight loss, or a GP request to investigate broadly are all better served by looking at everything at once than by scanning one region, getting an inconclusive answer, and coming back for the other.
The preparation has two parts
The two examinations want opposite things from you, and both matter. Fasting for six hours distends the gallbladder and clears bowel gas from the upper abdomen. A full bladder pushes bowel out of the pelvis and opens a window onto the uterus and ovaries. So: do not eat from six hours before, and drink a litre of water in the final hour without emptying your bladder.
One report, one appointment
You get a single consultant report covering both regions, rather than two separate ones to reconcile. Where a finding in one region explains symptoms attributed to the other, that connection is much easier to make when one radiologist has seen both.

- Pancreas, as far as bowel gas allows
- Spleen
- Both kidneys and the bladder
- The abdominal aorta and major vessels
- Uterus, endometrium and ovaries, or prostate
- Free fluid in the abdomen or pelvis

What to expect
Before, during and after
Before your scan
Nothing to eat for six hours before the appointment, then drink one litre of water in the hour beforehand and do not empty your bladder. You may drink water during the fast and should take regular medication as normal. If you are diabetic, or fasting is difficult, phone us before booking and we will arrange a suitable time.
During the scan
The upper abdomen is examined first, with breath-holds to bring the liver out from under the ribs, then the pelvis with the bladder still full. Warm gel and gentle pressure throughout. Allow the full forty minutes.
After your scan
You can eat, drink and empty your bladder immediately, and drive yourself home. The written consultant report follows, typically within three working days, and goes to your GP with your consent.
How to prepare
Nothing to eat for 6 hours beforehand, then drink one litre of water in the hour before your appointment and do not empty your bladder. The two requirements work together: fasting clears the upper abdomen, a full bladder opens up the pelvis.

Questions
Frequently asked
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can refer yourself. A referral letter helps, because a specific clinical question lets the radiologist give a more useful answer across two regions.
Is this cheaper than booking the two scans separately?
Yes, and it is one visit rather than two. The combined appointment is €210 against €150 each for the abdominal and pelvic scans booked on their own.
What if I forget part of the preparation?
Tell us when you arrive. Depending on which part, we may be able to give you water and wait, or rearrange you rather than perform a scan that may not answer the question.
Can I take my medication?
Yes, as normal with a small amount of water. If it must be taken with food, phone us before booking so we can plan the timing.
Is it safe?
Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than radiation, with no injection and no dye.
